What is Medical Cannabis?

Medical cannabis is a term used to describe the use of the cannabis plant and its constituent cannabinoids to alleviate symptoms and help people struggling with medical conditions. The Cannabis plant has been used for medicinal purposes for thousands of years across many cultures.

Today there is considerable evidence base to the medicinal uses of the Cannabis plant throughout history, from ancient Egypt and Victorian England to modern medicine. Until the 1930s medicine that contained extracts of the cannabis plant were part of the known Pharmacopoeia and sold in pharmacies with no special authorization.

Laboratory studies and clinical research carried out in the last 50 years, mostly in Israel, have greatly promoted the Global knowledge and therapeutic ability of the cannabis plant.

Tikun Olam’s medical cannabis is produced from flowers of plants that are grown and cared for under controlled standards of temperature, moisture, and light in order to ensure the consistency of the final products. The plant contains about 100 cannabinoids, among them the two primary cannabinoids Δ9-tetra-hydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC) and Cannabidiol (CBD).

The products made from the cannabis plant for medical purposes are intended to reduce pain, improve sleep, increase appetite, prevent nausea, and as an anti-inflammatory and treatment for rheumatic conditions. They also have positive effects on glaucoma, nerve protection, and spasm prevention. Cannabis also has an effect on the circulatory system and the respiratory system.

Tikun Olam’s medical cannabis is produced in a meticulous and sterile environment from the planting and harvesting stage through the production of the products and their delivery to patients.

There is clinical evidence that cannabis assists in the treatment of many diseases such as: spastic disorders accompanied by pain (such as Multiple Sclerosis, spinal cord damage), nausea (as a result of chemotherapy, radiotherapy, Hepatitis C medication, and HIV/AIDS treatment), chronic pain (especially neuropathic), Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Tourette’s Syndrome, Irritable Bowel diseases (Colitis and Crohn’s Disease), Glaucoma, rheumatic diseases, and inflammation. It also provides supportive care for HIV/AIDS and cancer patients, especially for appetite stimulation and weight loss prevention, and as a pain reliever.

The method of consumption: smoking, vaporizing, oil, capsule, or cookie has a determining effect on the way the treatment will affect symptoms. The methods differ in the dose required, the amount of time it takes to feel the effects of the treatment and the amount of time the effects last. Tikun Olam recommends receiving counseling and instructions from a trained doctor or nurse. It is important to note that smoking damages one’s health and alternatives are recommended.

Professional counseling is very important for correct and efficient treatment and supervision and guidance on recommended strains, dosage (initial doses and gradual increase), potential side effects, and more. During a counseling session at Tikun Olam, the patient takes the product for the first time under the supervision and guidance of an experienced registered nurse.
